Piggybacking off @loptyrofjugdral‘s misassumptions on Alvis post, some of the diction Fire Emblem Hero’s English localizers chose really bothers me.

The use of “hellfire”, like huh??? The choice seems out of character within the context of his setting and more from a Metatextual angle of the audience’s knowledge of his plot role.

In world, Alvis thinks of himself as a force of good, associating with both Crusader Fjalar, who we know from the epilogue stood for Justice, and Saint Maera who taught equal treatments for all. If anything I’d think Alvis would see the fire of his Holy Tome Valflame as divine and righteous, rather than something from the pits of the underworld. Likely Alvis smiting you with holy fire is the will of heaven, for him.

I’ve been told that in other FEH localizations (French, Spanish, German) the choice of “hellfire” is absent, which I’m glad for. Although it makes me worry that NoA’s current Treehouse team has no sense of subtlety when it comes to writing for villains… so I hope that FE4 remake is still a ways off.

i think this might be a case of just general writing issues, because he technically does say something like “my flames of hell burns everything”. my japanese isn’t the strongest admittedly but 地獄の炎 is translated to the “flames of hell”. though, i don’t think flame is written the usual way its written but again, my japanese is weak.

caeda has the same problem where she says she’s weak in her lvl 40 confession in both the eng and japanese version, though in her original games she says that she doesn’t need any protection ( though to be fair, in her base support with ogma, it seems like she wouldn’t deny someone’s protection but at the same time she probably doesn’t think of herself as weak ).

feh’s writing is so much denser and weaker than most other fe games due to it being a mobile game ( iirc fgo kind of suffers from this too with its already existing characters from the fate/ franchise in its game ), but at the same time treehouse has also made that denser writing…. bad, somehow ( haha zero vs niles; zero’s lines are much denser in feh because character personalities and motivations aren’t explored all that much but he doesn’t sound too campy like niles does, still ).

looking back and considering the hellfire line in context, though, i’m pretty sure “hellfire” is a reference to the disney song of the same name, since alvis’ love for diadora is, y’know, bad. buuut the context is still not a very good reference because i’m pretty sure from where he’s pulled, he has no idea that diadora is even his half sister in the first place. treehouse has thrown pop culture references in its games in the past so i wouldn’t be surprised if thats what they were going for.

so, it seems like it could be a case of both - general writing issues and maybe a bad reference thrown in by treehouse. it’s hard to judge how a fe4 remake would even go taking these things into consideration; the writing is denser like i said and nothing really dramatic or serious but in the right hands, it could be as good as the original.

honestly, though, i wouldn’t even trust treehouse with a fe4 remake in general. fe4 is problematic and would not survive a localization by them. if they were going to easily cut out siblings killing each other despite the fact that it explained character personality and the way they are, i can barely see fe4 getting away without a few bruises and cuts on its story.
