Unlike a lot of fans, I strongly believe that Niles is such a better name for everyone’s favorite sadist than Zero. A name like Zero just sticks out like a sore thumb in a fantasy setting and when you couple it with his appearance that actually fits in the setting, it’s really mismatched and jarring. I have no idea why so many people prefer the name Zero over Niles.

there’s a lot in fe’s setting that would stick out in a typical fantasy setting. the name “zero” is hardly any weirder than, say, the name chrom or nowi. it certainly sticks out more than names like chrom or nowi but, again, i think chrom and nowi are probably stranger names than zero. and yeah, there’s the whole zero’s probably not his given name but the name that his gang or himself adopted because a lack of a name or he just doesn’t remember it.

a lot of the original names in fates were very good references to their character and zero’s no different from that! jpn!zero’s character is that of a sadistic, bitter man who’s hung up on his past and thinks badly of himself and that’s the characterization most people tend to reference. the name zero is incredibly fitting when you look at it that way.

ironically, i think niles is probably the most ill-fitting name for a character like zero. i mean, for the localization it’s probably a little more fitting w/ how he’s rewritten but for his original writing ( and since that’s the characterization most ppl wanna reference ), the name niles sounds extremely stuffy. i don’t use the name zero just because i like it better; the characters of zero and niles are incredibly different on a written / meta standpoint that i feel the need to refer to zero by zero because… well, jpn!zero is usually the characterization i refer to.
