i spoke more about this on twitter but ive been seeing people say that “oh leon is a step up from zero!!” and perhaps its my bias speaking but i gotta kind of disagree. i dont think hes a step down, but he has writing issues himself.

leon is certainly a step up in terms of being nicer but aside from his love of valbar, what do we know about the character exactly? his character feels very… dry and meatless. perhaps its from lack of supports but at the same time, would current intsy make his love for valbar his quirk like they did with fayes love for alm?

would giving him more supports help leons character or would it all majority be about how much he loves valbar?

( granted he is better written than faye so ill give him that. )

zeros hardly what i call perfect representation but as a character, i lean more towards him than i do leon. theres more about zero that i feel for, regardless of his problematic nature ( at least in the jpn version bc the localization is a mess ). theres more character to him, i feel like.

it sort of feels like intsy made us pick between an lgbt character with some characterization and an lgbt character that was what tumblr was looking for.

( man, do i miss the days of ike and soren. at least they were both. )

fwiw i think leon is a good step in the right direction but as of now, he just kind of reads as “his only trait is that hes gay”. i think if he had more supports that centered around him as a person, i’d be more inclined to agree that hes a step up from zero. but i think he has some writing issues as well.

i think in the end the whole thing is a lil subjective. people who didnt like zero will cling to the character that isnt him. it makes sense.

in the end tho i will say both characters kind of fall flat from what good representation should be, but zero’s just got more meat to him. again, both of them are good for their own reasons but still have writing problems.
